Server and workstation - An introduction to Network

Because of the complexity of networks, one more component is necessary

A network administrator - This is an expert who knows all of the details of the network - how to set it up, how to keep it running smoothly, and how to solve problems when they occur. By the time you make it to the end of this site, you’ll be well prepared for the job.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the network components.

The server

The network server often looks exactly like a workstation. In the case of a Net ware server, the server is an ordinary IBM - compatible PC with a Pentium or better microprocessor. However that’s where the similarity ends.
The server runs a specialized piece of software called the network operating system, or NOS for shorts. The NOS is what make the PC into a server. This software provides resource to the workstations. As you might have guessed, this site will focus on one particular NOS NET ware 4.1. You will learn more about the benefits of Netware and other NOS choices, as well as the requirements for Net ware 4.1 servers, later in this chapter.

Note
Because one of the main functions of a network server is to provide file-sharing servers, the server is commonly referred to as a file server. The keyboard and screen of the server PC are referred to as the server console.

Workstations

A workstation is any computer that has a connection to the server. Workstations request resources from the server and exchange information with it. Workstations are also referred to as clients. Because the network revolves around the concept of clients communicating with servers, this type of network is called a client=server network.

The workstation is where users of the network do their work, using all types of software, including applications such as word processors, spread sheets, and databases. In addition to this software, the workstation runs network client software. This is the link between the workstation and the network. This software uses the network board installed in the workstation to communicate with the network.
