Network boards
The server and each
workstation use a network board, also we call it a network card to communicate
with the network. In the case of a PC, this is a card that plugs into the ISA,
VESA, EISA or PCI slot. The back of the card has a connector that connect to
the network cabling. Credit card sized PC-Card versions of network cards make
it possible to connect notebook and hand held machines to the network.
Network boards are
not available from Novel, and they don't come with net ware. You purchase them
from a computer dealer. A wide variety of network boards are available from
hundreds of manufactures. Common ones include Intel, 3COM, and SMC. These days,
it is becoming common to purchase PCs with network cards already installed.
In order to use the
network card, you will need a network driver also called a LAN driver for the
workstation or server. This is a specialized piece of software that works with
the net ware client or server software and knows hot to communicate with that
particular board. The network driver is the only program that is not guaranteed
to be provided with net ware. Although net ware provides drives for common
network cards, such as the Novel NE2000, on the installing CD-ROM you should
use the most current driver provided by the manufacturer of the network card.

Tip
Its best to
standardized on one type of network board for all of the computers within a
company network. This makes it easy to find the right drivers, and it also
simplifies troubleshooting and support.
Peripherals
Peripherals provide
extra functions to the network and its workstations. These are typically
attached to a workstation, but they may also be connected directly to the
network, or to a server. Peripherals fall into several categories.
Output device, such
as printers and plotters. These are used to provide printouts of network data,
which you can then scatter around your office to look busy.
Storage devices,
including disk drives and tape drives. These are used to store information
needed for network applications and backup data.
Communication
devices, such as modems. These are used to communicate with computers that are
not connected to the network or with other systems such as mainframes.
